Where Does The Body Find Answers?

from the Weekly Sticky "Where the Body Finds Answers"

How much stomach acid does it take to digest a cheeseburger?  Or, how much calcium is needed to heal a broken leg?  How about a fever, how high should it reach to fight a common cold?  You don't need to surf Google for the answers, your INNATE search engine already knows.

If you doubt there's genius inside you, just consider this – the 50,000,000 cells in your body that will die while you read this sentence… your innate intelligence knows how to replace every single one of them.  The trillions of impulses coursing through your Nerve System at this moment… innate is moving them at speeds approaching 248 mile per hour.  The number of heartbeats you'll get in your lifetime… innate reserved around 3 billion for you.

Google may be the web's leading source for information, but it's got nothing over your innate intelligence when it comes to keeping you alive and well. Innate has solutions to just about any health challenge you have.  All you have to do is search within to find the answer.

(Editor's note: Remember the objective of upper cervical care is to correct head neck misalignment that is interfering with proper brain to body communication. When this is corrected the body functions at a higher level and can often correct other problems more efficiently on its own. Please do not confuse upper cervical care as a treatment for any condition, disease or symptom.)

Amazing What The Living Body Knows

In today’s world, there is a doctor or specialist for every part of your body. The best doctor ever created works to keep us healthy and alive 24 hours a day. It is inside of us and it is referred to as the innate intelligence. Regardless of your beliefs, it is self evident, and we could all agree that life is intelligent.  This intelligence within us…

■Draws the blueprint and organizes every living organ for your body
■Regulates, directs and controls the body all of the time
■Knows when something is wrong inside of you and how to fix it.
■Rebuilds all tissues, organs, muscles and bones
■Tells you when to sneeze, when to blow your nose, when to go bathroom, when to sweat and when to shiver
■Raises the skin into a blister when the skin is burned
■Heals a broken bone or cut on the skin
■Tells you when to blink your eyes
■Grows your toe nails, fingernails, and hair
■Beats your heart and puts air into your lungs
■Regulates your body temperature
■Tells you when you are tired, thirsty or hungry
■Gets any sick organ or part of the body well
■KEEPS YOU ALIVE!

This intelligence uses our nerve system to coordinate and maintain us in a living and hopefully optimally healthy state. If there is an interruption or disturbance to your body’s inborn wisdom, odds are you are Subluxated.

SUBLUXATION is a condition that occurs when the top two vertebrae in your spine misalign causing the messages from the brain to the body to become distorted due to the pressure placed upon the BrainstemLiving in this state, your body is breaking down and beginning to malfunction.  The longer you live in this state, the less of your potential your body will express.  Sickness and/or disease can result.

Two Reasons Why Upper Cervical Care is Attractive

Adapted from "Chiropractic is attractive because..."

1. It trusts the wisdom of the body.

Many upper cervical doctors overlook this when explaining upper cervical care to patients. Perhaps this is because the allure of showing up as the hero, mimicking the attitude of traditional doctors, is more gratifying than telling the truth about the nature of healing. In other words, doctors, of any ilk, don't heal. Nor do drugs. Or adjustments!

Recovering one's health is a shedding process not an acquiring process. Which is to say, we each have within us the ability to heal. Usually, health can manifest by reducing obstructions or interferences rather than filling a void because something is missing.

We're not flawed, we're merely blocked. We're not deficient, we're merely constrained from our fullest expression. We're not suffering a drug shortage, we're merely exceeding our ability to accommodate one or more stressors. Patients are fully equipped for health. It's not you, it's them.

2. It’s simple.

By the second quarter in college, many upper cervical doctors have lost the simple elegance and minimalism of the care they provide. Obfuscated by technique, practice procedures, physiology and beneath layers of dogma and seminar rhetoric, upper cervical doctors sometimes emerge later as spinal therapists, medical doctor wannabes, patient pleasers or just confused.

The principles of upper cervical care often take a backseat to the practice of it and the "how" of practice often eclipses the "why." In the process, patients rarely learn that their nervous system controls the whole show and releasing their potential to self heal and function optimally, mediated by the nervous system is the focus of upper cervical care—not pain relief, posture restoration or even "treating" subluxations.

Obviously, this creates a major communication challenge. This week ask your upper cervical doctor to tell you the truth. And to do it simply. Because as Einstein observed, "If you can't explain something simply, you don't understand it well enough."

Upper Cervical Care: Helping Kids With Scoliosis

Can you Protect your Children from Scoliosis?

By Dr. Bill Davis

The Problem

“Scoliosis is a disorder that causes an abnormal curve of the spine, or backbone. The spine has normal curves when looking from the side, but it should appear straight when looking from the front.” (see picture) www.emedicine.net According to WebMD “In about 80% of cases, the cause of scoliosis is not known.” 80%! Wow that is a lot! In 8/10 of the people who have been diagnosed with scoliosis or curvature in the spine the medical profession have no clue what causes it.

Generally, the scoliosis is found when a child is examined for scoliosis in middle school. But frequently scoliosis is undetected until adulthood. Regardless, the earlier the curvature can be found the better. If it is identified at 13 years of age and it is already 15 degrees…it would have been much better to find it at 7 years of age when it was 8 degrees don’t you think? Especially if the underlying cause can be corrected and the progression of the scoliosis can be stopped. Also the earlier the scoliosis is identified the more likely the condition can be reversed.

Scoliosis has psychological consequences as well as physical consequences. Self image can be negatively impacted, especially in the formative adolescent years. Scoliosis can be so mild that an untrained eye cannot see the curve, or it can be severe enough to cause deformity. Children are often made fun of as a result of these deformities.

The physical consequences are much worse though. People with scoliosis are a greater risk of developing heart problems, breathing problems, osteoporosis, accelerated disc degeneration and spinal pain, reproductive function and pregnancy problems can be just some of the consequences associated with untreated scoliosis.

The medical approach has 3 main strategies. Wait until it gets worse! Put a brace on the entire trunk for up to 23 hours a day! Or dangerous surgery! Doesn’t sound like fun to me! Which of these approaches gets to the underlying cause?…none of them? The medical approach is focused on the effects and not the cause obviously.

The Upper Neck Connection

Two medical doctors from Europe have done extensive research into upper neck problems in newborns and how that relates to the health of children. Dr. Gutmann was researching the connection all the way back to the 1960′s… in 1987 Dr. Gutmann published his research linking the upper neck to problems ranging from scoliosis to ear infections, torticollis, colic and many other common childhood conditions.
Dr. Biedermann also has published extensively on this subject and published his findings in 1992. Between the 2 medical researchers they have studied over 1000 newborns and have observed a very high incidence of upper cervical misalignments on x-ray. Gutmann found over 80% in his study had problems in the upper neck that needed to be addressed! Birth trauma was the most common cause. Forceps delivery, vacuum extraction and even just normal birthing methods with a woman flat on her back rather than in the standing position where gravity can work, can be an extremely traumatic experience for the head and neck of a newborn.

It is reported that within the general population the incidence of Scoliosis is about 2.5% or about 25 per 1000 people. However, that is only the people who are identified as having scoliosis and it only includes those that have a 10 degree curvature or more. A 7,8, or 9 degree scoliosis can still have dramatic affects on the health of a person’s spine and body. Also many individuals have no idea that they have a curvature in their spine until adulthood. I have seen patients in my office who are in their 60′s who were unaware of a 10-15 degree scoliosis!

If the weight of the head is not balanced over the spinal column due to accidents and injuries to the upper neck this can result in postural changes including head tilt, shoulder tilt, hips uneven, and leg imbalance. The earlier the child develops this upper neck misalignment the more likely it is for them to develop a scoliosis when they hit their growth spurt.

A Solution

Early detection is the key to stopping the progression and possibly correct the scoliosis completely. All children should be evaluated after birth and regularly thoroughout the childhood years for the presence of an upper neck misalignment that could start this process in their spine. If a curvature is detected than the misalignment should be corrected as soon as possible. If the scoliosis is already very advanced due to lack of evaluation, than the misalignment should still be corrected and maintained and postural exercises should be given in order to prevent future progression. The longer the curvature has been there the more likely it will be to not correct completely.

(Editor's note: Certainly some people, especially young people, who have head/neck misalignment and have it corrected will experience drastic improvements in scoliosis. However, please remember the objective of upper cervical care is to correct head neck misalignment that is interfering with proper brain to body communication. When this is corrected the body functions at a higher level and can often correct other problems more efficiently on its own. Please do not confuse upper cervical care as a treatment for scoliosis or any other condition, disease or symptom.)

Who Is The Greatest Doctor On The Planet?

At first glance you'd think an upper cervical doctor was responsible for these words. But they were actually written by a Harvard medical school instructor and practitioner in the late 1800's. While this belief is trivialized today by the medical and pharmaceutical community, it remains the core foundation of Upper Cervical Care.

Upper cervical care humbly acknowledges that "the ONLY thing that can heal the body is the Power that created it." The wisdom Dr. Cabot refers to in his quote is often referred to as Innate Intelligence. It is the power of life that animates our cells, tissues and organs. It is the coordinating force that maintains our body's intricate chemical balance. It silently and confidently orchestrates all steps involved in the healing process from mending a broken bone to putting cancer in remission. It is in favor of you living, rather than you dying.

Upper cervical doctors often, and most certainly should, let you know about this great force inside you. If you really want to know who's responsible for getting you better from the weak state, chronic illness, incapacitating pain or depressing condition you first walked in with? Take a look in the mirror. It was the best doctor on the planet, the one staring right back at you, that did ALL the work.

Upper Cervical Doctors Don't Know Much?

A human being has 7 cervical (neck) vertebrae. How many do you think a giraffe has? Answer: 7 also. Humans have a total of 24 vertebrae in their spines. How many do you think a python snake has? Answer: 525. Why the sameness of giraffes and humans and the difference of humans and snakes? I don’t know. In fact, there are a lot of things that I don’t know about the human body both in its design and in its function. Lest you think that I am not very smart, let me add that the most knowledgeable scientists, anatomists, physiologists and doctors don’t know much about the body either. It has been estimated that we only know one-tenth of one percent (0.10%) of what there is to know about the body and its function. While we are all in pretty much the same boat when it comes to knowing about the body, those addressing the needs of the body are divided into two distinctly different groups when it comes to how to respond to our ignorance.

The first group feels that ignorance is relative. If they know more than someone else, or almost everyone else, they are okay. They feel they can just ignore or play down the importance of what they do not know. They do not subscribe to the idea that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. They try to affect what they can with the hope that the little they know will be significant enough to help a person. This group often sees the body as just a product of random activity affected by the circumstances around it. As such they feel comfortable in intervening, changing its function or its circumstances to whatever they think is best at any given moment.

The second group acknowledges its ignorance of the body and that this ignorance is a vital factor in relating to the human organism and its needs. They also realize that the living body has within it a means, an organizing principle, capable of running every internal function. Their ignorance just makes it all the more important that they allow the organizing principle to run the body. This group does not see the body as a product of random activity and chance but as a creation of an all-knowing Wisdom, designed to function according to principles which, if not interfered with, will do just that.

By now you have probably realized that upper cervical care falls into this second group. We call this organizing principle innate intelligence because it is there from birth (inborn) and the word intelligence emphasizes its wisdom in contrast to our ignorance. It makes human beings as well as giraffes with seven cervical vertebrae not because seven is a lucky number but because six would be too few and eight too many. It builds us with twenty-four vertebrae and the python with 525 because that is how many we need and how many the python needs. It is the wisdom which not only designs and builds a body in nine months but can run it for 100 or more years. People do live that long! However, its ability to run the body, heal the body and enable the person to reach his or her full potential in life can be limited by interference in the nerve system caused by head/neck misalignment. When this happens that organizing principle will probably not work as well as it should. Upper cervical care corrects these misalignments. They do not try to run the body but merely remove the interference to the expression of this innate intelligence.

You Are Smarter Than You Think

In upper cervical care we often talk about how wonderful this body of ours is. We have an inborn wisdom resident within each of us that runs our body twenty-four hours a day, every day of our lives, and it can do it perfectly if there is no interference present. It is the innate intelligence and at this very moment it is creating thousands of chemicals out of the food that we ate last. Not only is our body making these chemicals, but they are being made in exactly the right quantity, at precisely the moment they are needed. When the body is allowed to function as it should, it will never make too much or too little of any chemical substance. We truly have an amazing and intelligent body. We are all equally intelligent when it comes to this inborn wisdom. No one’s innate intelligence is smarter or becomes smarter than anyone else. The principle is the same in the newborn as it is in the eighty-year old. It has nothing to do with your I.Q.

There is, however, an educated intelligence, which is that body of knowledge we gain from experience and from formal and informal education. We recognize that there is a wide disparity between the educated intelligence of different people. Some of us are rocket scientists and some of us have an I.Q. that is room temperature. While there is a great difference in the amount of knowledge in most academic endeavors, when it comes to knowledge about the human body, there is little disparity between people. There may be a difference between the amount of knowledge about the human body and its proper function between different people, however, when it comes to what is known in relation to what is capable of being known, there is very little difference. For example, there may be a great difference between the smartest and the dumbest kid in the first grade. But that difference is nothing when comparing both of them to a college graduate.

When it comes to the knowledge of the human body, it has been estimated that we know perhaps 1/10 of 1% that there is to know about its anatomy and physiology in health and disease. Can you see the point? Even if you know next to nothing, it is not much less than the guy who knows all that is to be known, and nobody knows that. Even specialists, who are considered to be the smartest people in a particular field, only have a great amount of knowledge in one small area. It has been humorously suggested that a specialist knows more and more (knowledge) about less and less (more specific areas of the body). And that he has finally arrived when he knows everything about nothing. But the fact is that none of us knows very much compared to what needs to be known about the body to be qualified to run it. The high school dropout is no more or no less qualified to run the human body than is the valedictorian from the best medical school in the world. The difference in what they know compared to what there is to know is insignificant. That is why the really smart people recognize their limited knowledge and do not try to run the body or to assume the role of the innate intelligence, which knows 100% about keeping the body healthy. They understand that the best thing they can do for the body is to remove obstacles or interferences to the innate intelligence and then stay out of the way. Upper cervical care removes one of these interferences, Head neck misalignment, which prevents the nervous system from functioning properly.

You Are So Very Unique

There is a system of identification that, according to some authorities, will make P.I.N. numbers, passwords, and other forms of identification obsolete. Its called Biometric Identification. Everyone is familiar with the most commonly used form of this type of identification--fingerprints. However, there are some others that are even more accurate than a fingerprint. Face technology looks at a scan of the entire face utilizing 50 points around the nose, mouth, eyes, brow and jaw. The weakness of the system is, of course, identical twins, but growing a beard or putting on weight will also alter the facial structure. The hand, like the face, is another identification system. It has unique geometric shapes and sizes. Most of us are familiar with voice prints and, of course, DNA, although the latter is not practical at this time to be used at an ATM or at the supermarket.

The most technical biometric identification to be used is the iris of the eye. While a fingerprint has only 40 measurable characteristics, the iris of the eye has 266. Even if a third of the information is mismatched, it can still make a positive identification. We are truly unique individuals.

Just as there is a uniqueness about our face, our iris and our fingerprint, there is also a uniqueness about the inside workings of our body. No two people are alike as far as physiological needs. One person’s insulin needs are different than another person’s. Even the exact quality of the insulin is a little different. Two people may eat the exact same meal but the digestive juices necessary to break down that meal and make it useful to the body are totally different. Every person’s blood chemistry is slightly different. Our caloric intake needs vary from person to person and within the same person from day to day. There are literally millions of different measurable characteristics within human beings. How could any doctor know all these needs for any one person let alone for all his patients? The fact is that he cannot. The worst that can happen with biometric identification is a case of mistaken identity. The worse that can happen with a mistake in knowing what a person’s internal, chemical needs are is death, and that happens thousands of times a year. We simply cannot know the unique biochemical needs of the body. That is why medicine is not as much science as it is an art. It is making educated guesses on a daily basis regarding people’s health.

The Upper Cervical Doctor does not attempt to conform a person to a standard or norm, which is really unknown to the doctor. Upper Cervical Care recognizes that the body has a self-regulating, self-normalizing mechanism to it, what we call an innate intelligence. It is this self-regulating principle that has stored these millions upon millions of unique characteristics and needs and can meet those needs on a moment-by-moment basis. The problem with biometric identification is that it cannot adapt if you put on some weight or change the features of your face. The innate intelligence of the body, however, can adapt to changes in your body as well as changes in the environment. To accomplish this adaptation a communication system is necessary. That system in human beings is the nerve system. If it should be interfered with, due to head/neck misalignment then that which is uniquely you cannot be expressed freely and fully. The objective of Upper Cervical Care is the correction of this interference.

Birth, Kids and Upper Cervical Care

(Editor's note: I know that I just posted something on this recently but I have read a few birth stories over the last two days and wanted to post a bit more on the subject. Enjoy!)

How often have you heard people say, “One day I felt fine, and then the next day I was just. . .”? Probably enough that you do not even recognize the absolute absurdity of that statement. Except for severe traumas, such as car accidents, major falls, gunshot wounds, poisoning, etc., people do not suddenly become ill. Disease does not occur spontaneously. Small traumas, long-term abuse and negligence, though unnoticeable at first, take their toll on the body over a period of time. By the time the first symptoms appear, the body has already been malfunctioning for some period of time--often years.

This is the primary reason to have children evaluated by an upper cervical doctor. Studies indicate that up to 80% of children may sustain and injury to neck during the birthing process which is is not noticed at the time. Many of them will go 20, 30, or 40 years or possibly the rest of their lives with that injury creating interference in their nervous system. Even those who are not injured upon birth will have a variety of stresses put upon their neck and back as they grow. How many times does a child fall while he or she is just learning to walk? And after they learn to walk, don’t they run, skip, stomp, jump, and hop? Don’t they fall out of bed, fall out of trees, fall off their bikes, fight with their brothers and sisters, stand on their heads, play football, basketball, hockey, dance, gymnastics, and on and on and on?

Any one of these things is enough to injure the upper neck. Left uncorrected, the interference that results will also begin to take its toll on the body. Lowering the ability of the body to be well will make it less able to concentrate, less able to fight off disease, less able to coordinate and harmonize, less able to make the food that is eaten into usable form, and less able to clean the blood of toxins. It will make it less able to make the proper chemicals in the proper amount to control all the body’s functions, and less able to be strong, flexible and healthy.

It is important to note that the mechanism that originally brought two cells together and created the miracle that is you is still at work in you as it is in every other living being. It continually creates new tissue and maintains you in existence. The very mechanism by which we are able to be well is the same mechanism at work in the child. It is no less effective in the child than it is in the adult. Therefore, if it is important for you to be checked periodically by an upper cervical doctor to insure head/neck alignment and a nerve system free of interference, isn’t it equally important to have your children checked for the same interference?

Many people are concerned about the forcefulness of a correction to the upper neck for a growing child. This is not a concern with upper cervical care. Due to the precision involved, the corrections are gentle for everyone kids included. Children, on the whole, require far fewer corrections than adults, mostly because time and the results of abuse and negligence have not yet taken their toll. Who better than children to be under upper cervical care? Who could profit more than those who have not yet developed problems?

The Cancer Experiment: A Lesson Learned

An interesting experiment was done some years ago at Ohio State Penitentiary. Volunteer convicts were purposely injected with cancer cells. The scientists wanted to see if they could promote cancer in an apparently healthy person. They found that healthy prisoners, with no history of cancer did not develop cancer after the implantation. Within a few weeks every trace of cancer was gone.

Next, in those patients who had fought off the cancer cells, they introduced more thinking that while the body had fought off the first “dose”, it was now weakened and more susceptible. To their surprise, the patients’ bodies got rid of the second group of cancer cells even faster than the first!

The important lesson here is that the body has an inborn ability to resist cancer. So everyone and especially those with cancer should be finding ways to boost their immunity and resistance to cancer.

Likely cancer is caused by a combination of a number of factors that lead to a breakdown in the body’s ability to attack and kill cancer cells. But rest assured that these factors are all within the body and treatment and cures that come from outside the body are not the answer. The answer is in staying healthy, and Upper Cervical Care should be an important part of any program to help you stay healthy.
