Chronic Shoulder Problems and Upper Cervical Care: A Case Series
A case series published on July 31, 2014, in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research documented chiropractic care helping patients with chronic shoulder problems. The authors note how common shoulder problems are accounting for 16% of all musculoskeletal complaints with a yearly incidence of 15 new episodes per 1,000 patients seeking primary care.
This case series documented the care of two male patients with chronic shoulder problems. The first patient was a 55-year-old man who went to an upper cervical chiropractor with a chief complaint of right shoulder pain. Seven months earlier, the man had fallen off a 10-foot ladder and landed on his left shoulder, which was not the one he was suffering with at the time of his visit to the upper cervical chiropractor. His examination showed restricted range of motion for his right shoulder. A chiropractic examination showed areas of sensitivity in the man's neck along with postural imbalances of the spine. From the findings, it was determined that subluxations in the neck were present.
The second patient was a 60-year-old man who had pain in both shoulders for one year before coming to the upper cervical chiropractor. He did not have a history of an accident or trauma before his problem started. His examination showed range of motion reductions in his shoulders and his neck. It was also determined that this patient had a subluxation of his neck.
Specific upper cervical chiropractic adjustments were given to both patients according to their chiropractic analysis. The study reported that the results of the chiropractic care for both men were very positive. The 55-year-old man with pain in his right shoulder showed a complete return to normal shoulder movement within a few visits. The recovery was such that the man went on vacation shortly after his upper cervical chiropractic care.
The second man with pain in both his shoulders had a complete return to normal motion in both his shoulders after his first upper cervical chiropractic adjustment. Additionally, his pain was reduced to minimal after the first visit.
The authors noted that although both patients had issues with their shoulders, the chiropractic care given was exclusively to the upper neck, (upper cervical chiropractic care). Both patients were mainly concerned with their ability to move their shoulders, and both regained total range of motion as a result of their chiropractic care. In their conclusion, the authors wrote, "This case series provides support on the use chiropractic adjustments directed to the upper cervical spine in patients with subluxation, shoulder pain and dysfunction."

How Strong is Your Signal?
Most people are familiar with the concept of “bars” that identify the strength of a cell phone signal. When I used to be a Sprint customer, I could be in the same room with another Sprint customer who had the same phone as me, but we’d have different signal strengths. It was puzzling because one would have a full signal, and the other was struggling to maintain just one bar.
Similar to how your cell phone won’t work properly without a strong signal, your body depends on a strong signal between the brain and body via the nervous system.
Upper Cervical chiropractors use a technology called Computerized Infrared Thermography, or CIT for short, that primarily evaluates this “signal” balance between the brain and both sides of the body. It’s comparable to the “bars” on your cell phone.
Muscles, tissues and cells within the right half of the body should be receiving the same quality of nerve signals as the left half of the body. Lopsided “signal strength” favoring one half over the other suggests an imbalance in body function and performance.
One of the advantages of receiving Upper Cervical Care is that after the doctor makes an atlas-correction, we’re able to remeasure your body’s communication signal, and confirm that balance was restored. So there’s no guesswork involved… patients are able to see their improvement.
(Editor's note: Remember the objective of upper cervical care is to correct head neck misalignment that is interfering with proper brain to body communication. When this is corrected the body functions at a higher level and can often correct other problems more efficiently on its own. Please do not confuse upper cervical care as a treatment for any condition, disease or symptom.)

Chronic Headache Sufferers Find Relief With Upper Cervical Care
Many people are not aware of the relationship between upper cervical (neck) trauma and headaches. With all that modern science has
accomplished, there are still more unanswered questions than answered ones.
This is also true in the case of headache research. It’s been difficult to
pinpoint the exact reason(s) why certain people suffer chronic headache pain.
However, research is beginning to point toward upper cervical trauma as an
underlying cause for many types of head pain, especially migraine, cluster and
tension headaches.
The upper cervical area of the spine refers to the two
vertebrae located at the top of the spine, directly underneath the head. C1
(known as Atlas,) along with C2 (known as Axis,) are chiefly responsible for
the rotation and flexibility of the head and neck. Like the rest of the
vertebrae, they are extremely vulnerable to injury and trauma, especially
trauma to the head through auto or sporting accidents.
Because so many nerves transmit through the cervical region
(to and from the brain,) trauma to this area results in problems to other parts
of the body. This is where the relationship between the upper cervical area and
headaches becomes evident. If these vertebrae become displaced, even slightly,
chronic head pain can occur. Unless the neck injury is addressed, the symptoms
persist.
Upper cervical care involves addressing the position and function of these
injured cervical vertebrae, particularly C1 and C2. Realigning these vertebrae
may restore proper function to the area and reduce or eliminate many types of headaches.
The most common types of headaches for which people seek
upper cervical care are migraine, cluster and tension
headaches. Migraine headaches are characterized by intense pain on either one
or both sides of the head. Pain is usually located around the temples or behind
one ear or eye. The pain is so severe that it often causes extreme sensitivity
to light, dizziness and may even lead to vomiting. Migraines may occur with or
without ‘aura.’ Aura refers to visual symptoms which occur 10 to 30 minutes
prior to the onset of the headache. They are usually in the form of flashing
lights, lines, blind spots or even temporary blindness.
Cluster headaches almost always occur on only one side of
the head. Their onset is so sudden and intense, cluster headaches have been
described as “worse than childbirth.” In fact, the doctor who originally
identified and researched cluster headaches characterized their pain as being
able “to drive normal people to suicide.”
Tension headaches are sometimes called ’stress headaches.’
They often start midday and usually consist of a dull, aching pain rather than
a sharp, intense one. They start gradually and slowly build in intensity.
Tension headaches may last anywhere from less than one to several hours.
Of course, not every headache falls into one of these
categories. The type and degree of pain varies from person to person. However,
if any headache occurs more often than on an occasional or sporadic basis, it’s
safe to assume that there may be an underlying cause. Continually treating
chronic and recurrent headaches with pain medication may temporarily ease the
symptoms, but it won’t cure the problem.
Many of these headaches improve significantly while under upper cervical care. The number of visits required varies by
individual, as well as type and frequency of headache. A first visit to an upper cervical chiropractor usually involves a spinal evaluation including neurological tests and x-rays to assess alignment and function for each individual case. Patients often notice an improvement in symptoms, sometimes after only
a few visits with the doctor.

Is Upper Cervical Care Really That Simple?
As experts on the upper cervical spine, upper cervical doctors focus on the intimate relationship between the top two bones in the neck, called the upper cervical spine, and, more importantly, a vital portion of the nervous system called the brain stem. This relationship is absolutely essential to the body’s ability to restore and preserve health.
In order to grasp the upper cervical concept, you must first understand how the body is created and, more importantly, how it is designed to function normally and remain healthy
The brain stem controls and coordinates virtually every vital function of the body and acts as a conduit between the brain and the body. It extends from the brain down through an opening in the base of your skull and into the upper cervical region. Working much like a telephone cable, the brain stem has millions of individual wires, or nerve fibers, that send signals back and forth between the brain to every system, organ, muscle and cell within the body. We must have 100% brain-to-body communication in order to function properly and remain healthy.
The top two bones in the neck, the atlas and axis, are the only two vertebrae in the entire spine that don’t have an intervertebral disc. They are designed to move in six directions and are considered freely movable. By contrast, every other bone in the spine, from the 3rd vertebra all the way down to the bottom, not only have a disc but also four inter-locking joints that only allow the bones to move in 2 directions. As a result, the top two freely movable bones are much more susceptible to misalignment.
If one of the upper two bones becomes misaligned, two things happen. First and foremost, it irritates or interferes with the brain stem and reduces the brain-to-body communication. Wherever those messages were intended to go, whether it’s your foot, kidney, pancreas, heart, lungs, eyes or ears, it is going to malfunction in some way, subtle or obvious. Secondly, consider the upper spine as part of a kinetic chain, connected from head to toe. If either of the top two bones becomes misaligned, the rest of the body must compensate or adapt, resulting in total “body imbalance”. In the end, your health and physical body will be compromised. This is called head/neck misalignment.
Every healing profession acknowledges that the body has an inborn or innate ability to heal itself. By restoring these healing messages, your body will operate closer to its potential from the top, down and from the inside, out.
See...Upper Cervical Care is that simple.

What Does Upper Cervical Care Cure?
Adapted from "Chiropractors Do Not Cure Anything!" by Dr. Jason Watts
Upper cervical care doesn't cure anything; not
headaches, not asthma, not stomach disorders or even back pain. Then what does upper cervical care do?
Upper cervical care is based on a very basic scientific fact. Your brain is responsible for every bodily
function you ever perform from before you were born until the time you
die. Your brain sends those instructions
through a vast telephone network (known as the nervous system) to every cell,
tissue and organ in your body. If those
telephone lines are interfered with in any way, those instructions coming from
the brain can get distorted and the result is lost function.
Your spine is designed to protect the telephone lines. If the spine has been injured (even very
slightly and especially where the head and neck come together) it can become a major irritant to the nerve system, this is what upper cervical doctors call head/neck misalignment (vertebral subluxation). How
serious is this problem?
“Vertebral subluxation changes the entire health of the body
by causing structural dysfunction of the spine and causing nerve
interference. The weight of a dime on a
spinal nerve will reduce nerve impulse transmission by as much as
60%.” - Chang H. Suh, Spinal Biomechanics Specialist, University of Colorado
“Nerve dysfunction is stressful to the visceral nerve and
other body structures and the lowered tissue resistance modifies the immune
response and lessens the overall capability of the immune system.” - The Journal
Science, 1981
“The quality of healing is directly proportional to the
functional capability of the nerve system to send and receive nerve messages.” - J Edwards, MD, PhD., Journal of Neurological Science
Knowing how important the role of the nerve system is, it
should become clear how vital the job of the upper cervical doctor is. The objective of upper cervical care is
to correct head/neck misalignment that is interfering with proper brain to body
communication. Considering another medical
study which states that 80% of newborns receive their first spinal trauma
during the birth process, when do you think is a good time to begin checking
the spine for head/neck misalignment? Perhaps at birth, just a thought.
And at what point in life does it become acceptable to have head/neck misalignment distorting your nerve system? Hopefully never.
This is why periodic care throughout life makes so much
sense. Not to treat or cure any disease
or disorder, but to maintain your nervous system function at optimal
levels. Allowing your brain and your
body to communicate with maximum efficiency every moment of your life, that is
the real definition of wellness and that is what upper cervical care seeks to provide,
not a cure for a specific disease.
When people have head/neck misalignment reduced or corrected
and their nervous system is able to function better, do some diseases and
disorders and other symptoms go away?
Frequently, but in every case their body is able to function at a higher
level.

Brain, Spinal Cord Disorders And Upper Cervical Care
Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health
The research discussed a case of a child diagnosed with cerebellar ataxia and spinal variants similar to Arnold Chiari malformation, whose problems completely resolved following upper cervical care. Cerebellar ataxia is a disorder that results in balance and coordination problems and Arnold Chiari malformation occurs when the back of the brain protrudes through the hole in the bottom of the skull.
“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and the brain,” stated Dr. Adam Willemin, the author of the paper. “Basic science research shows that the proper development and function of the brain relies on proper structure and movement of the spine from an early age.”
Research has shown not only that the developing brain relies on normal structural integrity and joint movement, but that complex neurochemical communication and pathways involved in helping humans to adapt to their environment and even to “feel good” are tied into spinal biomechanics and their related neurological pathways.
“It makes perfect sense when you think about it,” stated Dr. Willemin. “The brain constantly needs and wants to know where our body is in space. If there is interference with the neurological communication between the spine and the brain all sorts of malfunctions can occur and this can lead to balance problems, dizziness and visual disturbances.”
Researchers studying the connection between upper cervical care, brain stem compression and neurological disorders believe that these types of functional disorders can be caused by even slight misalignments of the bones in the upper part of the neck.
“There are very important functional relationships between the upper cervical spine and the brain that if disturbed can result in a host of problems with how the brain functions,” remarked Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study.
According to McCoy “If there is compression of the upper part of the spinal cord from abnormal position or movement of the spinal vertebra this can lead to nerve interference. It is this interference that (upper cervical doctors) correct.”
The child reported on in the study not only had interference but also had protrusion of the back of the brain into the spinal canal causing even more compression. As a result she suffered from balance and coordination problems, could no longer attend school or perform her normal daily activities and experienced improvement after just a few upper cervical care visits. The author of the study called for more research on the role of upper cervical care in patients with these types of disorders.

Upper Cervical Care And Genetics

DNA, three little letters that no one ever heard of a century ago yet today almost everyone has heard of. Although most people do not know that DNA stands for, deoxyribonucleic acid, we do know that it is the blueprint for the human body. Within the genes of a fertilized egg are the plans for everything from the color of your eyes to the maximum amount of time you have on the earth. Scientists have even identified many of these genes and determined what their responsibility is in various functions within the body. Their desire is to alter these genes and to repair damaged ones that may lead to medical conditions. Genetic altering and cloning are just part of this entire concept that sounds very much like science fiction. But then who would have thought 75 years ago that we would be talking to each other on phones without wires!
The discovery of the genetic code was truly a great event, worthy of the Nobel Prize that it gained for its discovers. But in all the hoopla and attention paid to the genetic code we have lost sight of the fact that it is just a blueprint. First, a blueprint does not create itself. It is the result of thoughts of an intelligent person. The architect or the designer makes the blueprint. The blueprint may say your eyes are going to be blue but it did not design the thousand parts that make up the eye anymore than the blueprint grew the wood or made the bricks that will go into the building. That too took intelligent actions on the part of brick makers, and of course, “only God can make a tree.”
The major area where the genome discovers went wrong was to assume that the DNA makes the body, that it creates new cells to fashion the organs and tissues of the human organism. That would be like setting down the set of blueprints at the work site, dumping the bricks, cement, steel and wood next to it and saying “go ahead blueprint, erect this building.”
Blueprints are great, even necessary to the success of the building and perpetuation of any structure. (If a building was just thrown together without a design it probably would not last very long). DNA is necessary for the design and perpetuation of the human organism, but it is only a blueprint. The architect and the builder of the human body is a principle called life. In upper cervical care, we call that principle the innate (inborn) intelligence of the body. It even repairs and makes changes to the blueprint. It then takes the blueprint and creates the organs and system of the body. It will even make changes when the blueprint is not quite what it should be. The innate intelligence can compensate for weaknesses in our DNA. For example, just because you have a genetic tendency toward a condition like diabetes does not mean you will necessarily have the disease. The innate intelligence of the body can overcome certain genetic predispositions. It can do it a lot better if it is free to express itself. That is where upper cervical care comes in.
The innate intelligence uses the nerve system to cause function, adapt the body and compensate for genetic weaknesses. If there is an interference in the nerve system due to head/neck misalignment the body just cannot adapt and compensate as well. Your DNA is important. But remember a dead body has cells all with DNA and it does that body no good. Only the life-giving, life-enhancing innate intelligence of the body can direct the DNA to benefit you, your life and that of your family.

To Intervene Or Not To Intervene

When it comes to a health care professional addressing the health care needs of a person, there are essentially two approaches. The first and most common is intervention care. In this approach, the doctor or health care professional intervenes in the function of the body. That intervention may be as minimal as giving over-the-counter medication or as drastic as major surgery. The assumption on the part of the one who is intervening is that their professional expertise has given them the ability and the right to determine what is best for the body. There are, no doubt, occasions when intervention is necessary. First-aid measures save lives that would otherwise be lost. However, there are other situations when the need for intervention is not so clearly demonstrated. In these situations, the health care practitioner may or may not be doing more harm than good. In still other situations, intervention is clearly NOT called for. Whenever there is intervention, harm is done to the body, even if it is only taking an aspirin for a headache that will be gone after a good night’s sleep. You can see that intervention may be dangerous, that it takes great knowledge (perhaps more than any human being has), often is an educated guess and is always accompanied by an uncertain outcome to some degree.
A second approach is non-intervention. It involves doing something FOR the body rather than TO the body. Its objective is to remove an obstacle or interference to the proper function of the organism. With this approach, the practitioner does not determine what the body needs, how much or in what quantity. He/she only determines what the body does NOT need and seeks to remove that interference. The desire is not to add anything to the body nor to take away anything that it was designed to have. Practitioners of non-intervening approaches believe that the less that is done to the body, the better off it is. They acknowledge that on occasions it may be necessary to intervene, to do something to the body, but that is not their objective.
Upper cervical care is a non-intervening approach. The upper cervical doctor recognizes that head/neck misalignment interferes with the function of the nerve system and as such, causes a lack within the body-that of proper nerve flow. They do not intervene in the function of the body. They do not try to increase or decrease its function. They do not try to add anything or take anything away. Their sole objective is to introduce a slight force, which the body can use to correct the misalignment and the resulting interference. In this day when there is so much intervention, so many people trying to run the body, trying to supersede nature, trying to alter physical function to conform to their idea as to what it should be, it is nice to know that there is at least some professionals that want to do nothing more than remove interference to the perfect expression of the body’s inborn wisdom.
"There is nothing that I can do about what is wrong with you, what I can do however is address what is right in you. You cannot fight darkness you must turn on the light. You cannot fight disease, you must turn on life." -Dr. Jean Belaval

Lawn Care and Upper Cervical Care?

I was sent this some time ago in an email and I really liked the lesson it can teach us if we chose to see it. It is a funny story but I hope it makes you think a little too. Enjoy!
GOD’S THOUGHTS ON LAWN
GOD: Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistle and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honeybees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles.
ST. FRANCIS: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers "weeds" and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.
GOD: Grass? But, it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It's sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?
ST. FRANCIS: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.
GOD: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.
ST. FRANCIS: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it-sometimes twice a week.
GOD: They cut it? Do they then bail it like hay?
ST. FRANCIS: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.
GOD: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?
ST. FRANCIS: No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.
GOD: Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?
ST. FRANCIS: Yes, Sir.
GOD: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.
ST. FRANCIS: You aren't going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.
GOD: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It's a natural cycle of life.
ST. FRANCIS: You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.
GOD: No. What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose?
ST. FRANCIS: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.
GOD: And where do they get this mulch?
ST. FRANCIS: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.
GOD: Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?
ST. CATHERINE: "Dumb and Dumber", Lord. It's a story about....
GOD: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St Francis.
So what is the lesson and what does it have to do with Upper Cervical Care? All of nature is full of patterns and purpose. Things that we see as not needed, not beneficial, or even as a problem aren’t necessarily so. Sometimes we do not see the larger picture and where those things fit in or what their purpose is. Many people think about their bodies the same way the Suburbanites in the story viewed their lawns. That we must attempt to change or improve on what nature provides us. We can still care for the body but we must remember that nature (the lawn or our bodies) doesn’t need any help from us it just needs us to not interfere with its function. This is where Upper Cervical Care comes in because its goal is to help reduce interference between the brain and body. This interference can prevent proper function and health. The inborn wisdom of the body knows what to do as long as we don’t interfere with its function. So relax and let your life and your lawn happen and interfere a little less with the process of both.

Upper Cervical Spine Neurology

From The International Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association (IUCCA)
Of the voluminous research compiled in the literature on spinal arthrokinematics and neuropathophysiology, the most neurologically intensive is on the upper cervical spine. The current literature is replete with information on aberrant upper cervical biomechanics and its possible ramifications on brain stem and higher order functions. Neurological pathways have been traced with radioisotopes from the upper cervical spine to brain stem centers. Dysfunctioning and non-functioning areas of the brain have been mapped, the cause found, and the solution traced to possible causes in the upper cervical spine. The amount of supporting research is staggering and exciting.
No other site in the human body has so much data on the possible effects of an adjustment on global body function than the upper cervical spine. Although lower spinal dysfunction has been shown to potentially cause local neurological disturbances, the magnitude of these disturbances are significantly less than in the upper cervical spine. This junction between the brain control centers and the body below deserves critical attention if one is intent on consistently affecting the body as a whole.

Posture, Upper Cervical, Proper Function

The below abstract is relevant to Upper Cervical Care in the sense that when head/neck misalignment is corrected the body assumes a more optimal posture. Just another way, from a mechanical perspective, Upper Cervical Care benefits the body and helps with conditions at sites far removed from the upper neck.
POSTURAL AND RESPIRATORY MODULATION OF AUTONOMIC FUNCTION, PAIN, AND HEALTH
John Lennon, BM, MM, C. Norman Sheeley, M.D., Roger K. Cady, MD, William Matta, Ph.D., Richard Cox, Ph.D. and William F. Simpson, Ph.D.
AJPM 1994; 4:36-39 (American Journal of Pain Management)
Despite considerable evidence that posture affects physiology and function, the significant influence of posture on health is not addressed by most physicians. In fact, neither comprehensive postural nor structural evaluation is a routine part of training in physical diagnosis, and most osteopathic physicians do not describe postural/spinal mechanics in their usual patient evaluations.
Observation of the striking influence of postural mechanics on function and symptomatology have led to our hypothesis that posture affects and moderates every physiologic function from breathing to normal hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture. The most significant influences of posture are upon respiration, oxygenation, and sympathetic function. Ultimately, it appears that homeostasis and autonomic regulation are intimately connected with posture. The corollary these observations that many symptoms, including pain, maybe moderated or eliminated by improved posture.
