Epilepsy, a Nine-Year Old Girl and Upper Cervical Care

Upper Cervical Care in a Nine-Year-Old Female
With Occipital Lobe Epilepsy: A Case Study

FROM: Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research 2011 (Feb 3): 10–17

Susan Hooper PhD, DC, Allison Manis DC

Objective: The reduction of an upper cervical subluxation (head/neck misalignment) through (upper cervical) chiropractic care in the case of a child with occipital lobe epilepsy is described.

Clinical Features: A nine-year-old girl presented with uncontrollable blinking of the left eye and fainting spells, previously diagnosed by a neurologist as occipital lobe epilepsy.

Intervention and Outcomes: High velocity and light force adjustments (Blair technique) were applied to the first cervical vertebra on three separate occasions. Other low force adjustments (Activator) were administered to various levels of the spinal column where vertebral subluxations existed. The patient’s uncontrolled eye twitching decreased immediately following the first upper cervical adjustment and ceased completely 3 weeks following the final adjustment. The twitching has not resurfaced in approximately 2 years.

Conclusions: This case report demonstrated resolution of signs and symptoms associated with occipital lobe epilepsy in a child following the reduction of an upper cervical subluxation.

Upper Cervical Care Stories Of Healing: Part 5

Editor's Note: Today our story comes from a patient of Upper Cervical Health Centers in their Tulsa, OK office. Again, please remember that upper cervical doctors do not treat any condition or disease. They are simply removing an obstruction to the body healing on its own. When this is accomplished and it stays that way the wisdom of the body can do amazing things.

----------------------

Oh, where to begin……. Thirteen years ago I was hit head-on by a driver who chose to cross over into my lane on a two-lane highway . The impact was at 70 mph. It was a miracle I survived. The injuries I sustained were from my seat belt and from the sudden jolt of the impact. The majority of my muscles in my back, neck, and chest were torn and several of my ribs were fractured. I underwent physical therapy for a year and a half. Then I was released because there was nothing else that could be “medically” done for me. I was told by two doctors, upon my release from their care, that they were sorry because I was so young and they went on to give me a list of “things” I could not and would not, ever, be able to do for the remainder of my life and that within 10 years I would have to have back surgery that would fuse several of my bones together. I asked, “What about having children? ” They proceeded to tell me not to even try it and that I should just be thankful I survived. At 23 years of age, I was unwilling to except such a bleak future.

Several days after the “accident”, my dad took me to a chiropractor. With great pain, I was put back into place. I continued chiropractic care for 12 years and I know it helped me continue to keep going on with my life.

About a year after my physical therapy ended, I began to have what two years later would be diagnosed as seizures and “possible” epilepsy. I underwent numerous tests and eventually gave in to taking prescription medication. For the next 9 1/2 years, without warning I would experience seizures. The seizures would include the inability to speak clearly (many times my sentences would come out in reverse word order or with every other word missing) or not at all, the temporary loss of consciousness, loss of muscle control, and falling. After the seizures occurred, I would be totally exhausted (mentally and physically).

At the age of 34, my regular visits to my doctors and chiropractor were literally doing no good. In addition to the seizures, I began have trouble bending down and getting up due to dizziness and my back ”locking-up”. It was then that I became desperate for someone or something that could help me.

That help came in form of a childhood friend who had recently discovered upper cervical care. Shortly after talking with my friend, I called and set up an appointment. Being under the care of a wonderful Upper Cervical Doctor has literally changed my life. I am now 35 years old, “drug free”, have not had a seizure in months, am able to bend down and get back up without experiencing dizziness or my back ”locking-up”. The benefits of Upper Cervical Care are tremendous. By keeping my body in proper alignment, it is literally healing itself. AMAZING!

The Upper Cervical Story of Louella Harris

Louella's Story is amazing and the non-profit organization she started is equally so. The National Awareness Campaign for Upper Cervical Care (NACUCC). The next few posts will be from information put out by NACUCC. Enjoy!

"So Much Pain. So Unnecessary!"

Louella Harris contracted polio in 1958, in Kenya, East Africa she was 3 years old. Thirty-four years later, after appearing on television and radio for affirmative action in her state, obtaining a Master's degree and getting married, pain began creeping up Louella's arms and neck and burned into her chest. Her medical doctors called it a combination of Post Polio Syndrome, and a condition called Fibromyalgia. Their only recommendations were painkillers and exercise. The pain grew so intense that Louella became confined to bed for months. Any sort of movement at all was agony. Her husband, Richard, became her personal attendant, He dressed and fed her and helped with all her personal needs on a daily basis. Louella couldn't even sit up to watch television or hold a book.

In desperation, the Harrises tried everything, including chiropractic. The problem was that the chiropractic procedure she experienced, while it had helped others, didn’t seem to help her. To make matters worse her medical doctors only offered drugs and exercise. Nutrition wasn't even affecting the pain. At that point, there honestly didn’t seem to be any answers anywhere.

Then, one day, while she lay in bed fighting the pain and watching the clock to see when she could take her next pain pill, Louella had an uncanny feeling come over her. The inexplicable feeling carried a message. The message was that indeed there was an answer for her. And when she found it, it was going to be much bigger than just for her.

A few weeks later, a friend called and told her about a little known procedure practiced by less than 2000 chiropractors worldwide. Louella located one of the Upper Cervical chiropractors in her state. He turned out to be a highly skilled, big-hearted doctor who took the time to call her back and answer as many questions as possible without actually examining her. He gave Louella no guarantees, but the information he shared with her was different than anything she had ever heard of before. That in itself gave her hope.

Four months after Louella first experienced precision Upper Cervical chiropractic she was out of bed, back to work, and pregnant! Nine months later she gave birth to a baby girl at age 39, naturally. That was just the beginning.

After her dramatic recovery, Richard and Louella met people who had struggled with all kinds of conditions. These were people who had been told by their medical doctors there was nothing that could be done for them. Yet their conditions were either being eased or eliminated all together by having their bodies balanced and proper communication between the body and the brain stem restored. These were people who had suffered from fibromyalgia, migraines, epilepsy, ADD, hypertension, trigeminal neuralgia, TMJ, some forms of arthritis and carpal tunnel, immune system disorders, herniated disks, numbness and tingling in the limbs, allergies and asthma, neck, back, arm and feet pain, sciatica and more, all of which were improving to some degree or another. Victims of accidents were being helped at a fraction of the time and expense as those undergoing traditional forms of rehabilitation. The procedure was not a cure-all by any means. However, it was surprising how much improvement was experienced by so many people with a variety of conditions that did not seem to have any apparent commonality.

Richard and Louella soon realized that if healthy children and adults would get under this care, countless problems could be avoided before they ever start. But people just didn’t know to do that. The Harrises didn't. In fact, when it finally dawned on the Harrises how fundamental this procedure was to overall health, they were appalled at their own ignorance and the ignorance of the general public. They had lived almost 40 years with absolutely no information about this at all.

It was obvious that at the age of 3 when Louella’s health problems first started, if someone had told Louella’s parents about this procedure, her whole life might have been different. When the Harrises grasped the fact that all that suffering might have been avoided, not just in her life, but in the lives of millions of others, they felt impelled to take a leap of faith, drop both their careers, and found the National Awareness Campaign for Upper Cervical Care. The N.A.C.U.C.C. is a non-profit consumer awareness organization dedicated to educating the public worldwide about this care.

During one of her interviews on CBS, Louella said, “This type of health care was available all the time I suffered. We just didn't know about it. It's one thing to hurt because nothing can be done. It's entirely another to suffer because of ignorance. That's tragic. There are millions of adults in pain right now because they've never heard of this. There are millions of children facing a lifetime of problems because their parents are unaware of the critical role the care of the brain stem area, plays in the future health of their child. There’s so much pain and it’s so unnecessary. It has to stop. The NACUCC is committed to reaching every man, woman and child with this information. When the public at large finally grasps how fundamental Upper Cervical health care is to the health of the entire body, it will change how we take care of ourselves and how we take care of our children.”
BRAIN MESSAGES DIRECT ALL BODY FUNCTIONS!

Research is showing that body imbalance and brain-to-body disruption of communication can cause or complicate all kinds of conditions. The previously mentioned conditions are listed not because this procedure cures any of them, but because it demonstrates that the body can heal itself in many different ways if it is given what it needs to heal. The conditions listed have been known to improve or be eliminated when different individuals have had their atlas and/or axis, (C1 and C2) corrected. This does not mean that these conditions will be eliminated in every person who has their Upper Cervical spine realigned. It does mean that if the condition is being caused or complicated by an atlas/axis being out of position, the condition is likely to improve or be eliminated once the bones are repositioned.

Please note that 2 people can be diagnosed with the same condition and after their atlas is corrected, the condition in one may be completely eliminated, while the same condition in the other person may improve only a little. Carpal tunnel is a good example of this. If the problem is actually in the wrist, then correcting the atlas may help the condition only minimally. If, on the other hand, the atlas is causing irritation in the nerves flowing down into the arm and into the wrist, the carpal tunnel is likely to improve remarkably. Note, however, that 99% of the people we have tested in our seminars around the country, have all been imbalanced with one short leg. Even the person who has carpal tunnel in the wrist from repeated use of the wrist and hands such as a typist or a factory worker, most likely has a misaligned atlas as well. Correcting the atlas and restoring brain-to-body communication and body balance will, at the very least, help them cope with their condition better.

When an Upper Cervical Spinal Correction is made, Body Balance is restored. Stress, tension and pressure from the area below the Brain Stem are removed. This reactivates the flow of healing messages from the brain to the affected part of the body and immediately, the self-healing process begins. It is imperative that you have your atlas examined. It’s role in overall health is so crucial, you need to at least rule out the possibility that a misaligned atlas is involved in your condition(s).

Seizures And Other "Odd" Conditions

Several cases are presented involving seizures and other conditions and the results obtained.

Patient was experiencing 1 to 70 seizures per day prior to upper cervical care. On the 17th day after the adjustment, the seizures numbered 100 (the most recorded). On the 27th day the seizures abated. The seizures remained absent for approximately 4 weeks.

Case Study No.2: "A 22-month-old child diagnosed with chronic infection and febrile seizures. Condition started when he fell out of a chair and hit his head on the floor. He had been on antibiotics and Phenobarbital since age six months. As a result of the medication did not eat well and lacked the strength to play. Analysis revealed C1 subluxation. Within 4 months of adjustments all medication was stopped and he resumed normal activities for a boy of his age."

Case No. 1560: Epilepsy (grand mal): Age 24. He has had seizures since age 7, most of the convulsions occur at night, averaging 1-5 every 24 hours. Patient's entrance remarks: "The longest that he has gone without any attacks has been two or three weeks and that was immediately after adjustment from local chiropractor. Patient has been taking Phenobarbital for past 17 years." Phenobarbitol use was discontinued a day or two prior to his entering the BJP Clinic and "much of the reaction following reduction of nerve pressure was, in our opinion, withdrawal symptoms.." After the first adjustment his attacks increased in severity and number. The patient began to experience various symptoms: headache, hallucinations, numbness in both hands. The attacks increased per day to 12, 26, 51, 41, 54, 78, 97, 125-150 (in one 24 hour period!). The patient then reported five seizure-free months. Symptoms returned briefly after dental work was performed but after adjustment disappeared. Patient eventually remained seizure-free.

Case No. 2348. Epilepsy: aged 5 years: March 1944 child had a streptococci infection in inner ear. Started falling many times each day: often hurt himself. Child had a tonsillectomy, appendectomy, and hernia operation "since this trouble started." Child had first adjustment 8-22-45. Immediately after the first adjustment, "child became more alert and his eyes started getting clearer. His appetite increased and we noticed he wasn't so nervous." In the two weeks since the first adjustment, the child gained five pounds. Child was discharged and parents were advised to have child under observation for period of several months as the original NCM reading (pattern) has a good chance of returning. Child had a "mild attack" three months later and has since remained free of epileptic symptoms. Child had one adjustment in all. Child's father later entered Palmer School Chiropractic.

This is the story of a 5-year-old boy referred by his parents because of recurring middle-ear infections at one-month intervals. Child had been diagnosed with cortical blindness, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and severe brain damage, secondary to possible aborted crib death or viral encephalitis. His mother reported he had been a very healthy child. "Two days following a well-child checkup with an inoculation," became "colicky" and developed a mild upper respiratory infection with fever. After putting him to sleep, he became cyanotic, gasping for air and nonresponsive. In ER a septic workup found no infection. A cranial CT-scan showed cerebral edema, comparable with either an ischemic insult or sepsis. Child began to have seizures 24 hours later, diagnosed as severe hypoxemic encephalopathy, secondary to possible SIDS or vital encephalitis. Child remained on Phenobarbital for over 1½ years then placed on dilantin. Multiple specialists aid he would never walk, speak, regain his vision or progress in school. At the time of his first chiropractic visit, he was having 30 grand mal and complex seizures a day and otitis media once per month. "Upon presentation, the patient was non-ambulatory, uncommunicative and non-responsive with a constant loud vocal drone and almost constant writhing torsocephalic motions.gross motor coordination included reaching out with his hands and rolling over onto all fours."

Management: "Correction of the (atlas) was chosen as the first to be adjusted." Knee-chest posture adjustment on posterior arch of atlas. After the 1st adjustment, the mother noted that he had his first good-night sleep in weeks. After the 2nd adjustment seizures reduced to only 10 a day, vocal drone became a quiet intermittent moan and he began to clap his hands. During the next week patient had become more alert, sitting up and looking around, responded to sounds and seizures decreased to 5 per day. Pupillary reflexes returned to normal, almost all writhing motions had ceased, ears were clear of effusion. 3rd week: seizures were 5 per day, no grand mal. Sleeping through the nights. For the first time in his life he vocalized "dada" and began vowel sounds. Overall, spasticity had de- ceased in all extremities. He began showing fine motor skills. He had his first month free from otitis media in 9 months. 5 th week: ophthalmologist noted a drastic improvement with recovery of central field vision. Seizures now to 3 per day. Saying more words and improved fine motor coordination. 7-12 weeks: seizures reduced to staring spells which saying his name brought him out of. Over the next 10 months improvement continued. All epileptic drugs removed and neurologist declared him non-epileptic. He remained free of ear infections. His vision improved to the point where he was prescribed glasses. Vocabulary continued to increase. He was learning to feed himself and was potty training. He was able to walk slowly with the assistance of holding someone's hand.

Five cases were presented. Conventional EEG studies demonstrate responses of two children with petite mal (absent seizure) with potential for generating into grand mal. Upper cervical adjustment reduced negative brainwave activity and reduced the frequency of seizures over a four month period. In two cases of "hyperactivity" and attention deficit disorder, upper cervical adjustment reduced non-coherence between right and left hemi-spheres in one child and in another, CEEG demonstrated restoration of normal incidence of the alpha frequency spectrum. Increased attention span and improvement of social behavior were reported in both cases. A child rendered hemiplegic after an auto accident displayed abnormal brainwave readings. After adjustment, the CEEG demonstrated more normalized brainwave readings. Child was able to utilize his left arm and leg contralaterally to the injured side of the brain without assistance after upper cervical adjustments.

Epilepsy and Upper Cervical Care

by Dr. Fred Barge

My first encounter with epilepsy came in my first two weeks at The Palmer School of Chiropractic, April 1951. I had just turned 18 that January and I was a very young and green Fred Barge that entered P.S.C.

I obtained a room in a rooming house and the person in the room next to mine, was a man of about 35 years of age, his name was Bob, a patient at the B.J. Palmer Research Clinic. Bob stood about 6 foot and 3 inches and weighed in at least 225 pounds, a towering figure indeed. One evening I was studying at my desk in my room, door open, I began to feel a presence behind me, I turned and there stood Bob, a vacant look on his face. I spoke to him and received no reply but in an instance he fell to the floor in a violent grand mal seizure, with loss of bladder and fecal control. I did what I could to move things so he would not hurt himself as he thrashed around, it seemed an eternity but he quieted down and an exhausted embarrassed man lie before me on my apartment floor soiled by his incontinent condition. Thus my introduction to epilepsy.

I helped him to the bathroom we shared and then into his room where he reclined and fell into a deep sleep. I did not see Bob until the next evening when his story unfolded. Some years ago, he was referred by a chiropractor to the B.J. Palmer Research Clinic for his epilepsy. After about 6 to 8 months care, he was in complete remission and he returned to his home state, Texas, to the care of his local chiropractor. He stated to me that he was completely free of the problem for over six years. He owned a bar in Texas and in a scuffle with a besotted patron he was struck on the head and the seizures returned. I don’t know if the epilepsy was ever brought under control again as I moved to a boarding house with some friends and lost track of Bob. However, in the B.J. Palmer Research Clinic, where I interned, a goodly number of epileptics were cared for, and in talking with my Father, Aunts, Uncles and Cousins, success stories in the care of children with epileptic seizures were common.

Coincidentally my first case in practice was an epileptic boy named Bob. He had the same massive grand mal seizures and as I recall he had two to three seizures a week. He was about 8 years of age, embarrassed by his problem, he was often truant from school and his parents had to literally force him to go. The drugs also made him lethargic and somewhat retarded acting and even on drugs he had seizures every week. After taking cervical and full spine x-rays of Bob, the young Barge, Neurocolometer, chirometer and portable toggle table in hand made house calls to care for the young man.

Soon after I cleared his Atlas (within the first two months of care) Bob ceased having seizures in the day time hours, he had them only at night. Once fully aware that he was free of them in the day a new boy blossomed forth, his parents cut down the drugs and he was soon drug free and going to school regularly. I even introduced him to my favorite hobby, fishing. There was a slough off the Mississippi River about 2 miles form his home and he became an avid fisherman. Yes, he still had a few spells at night, but by the time he was 16 he had been free of spells for 3 years, and was able to get his drivers license.

Today Bob still occasionally sees one of my associates and to my knowledge he is completely free of his problem. From this one case the word got out that Dr. Barge through chiropractic care, helped in epilepsy. And thus in my practice, I cared for many an epileptic patient with good and sometimes complete results. I even adjusted some epileptic dogs, one Cocker Spaniel named Susie. She ran freely in rural farm area near Lacrosse, most everyone in the farm community saw Susie have one of her frequent “fits”. Her master called and asked if I could help an epileptic dog, I stated chiropractic could help any creature with a backbone and I began adjusting Susie. When she subsequently recovered, the word again spread. I even had a gruff old male patient sign the referral space on my clinic entrance form saying “Susie Sent Me”.

Upon my questioning he said “if you fixed that dog you must be able to fix anything”. I have seen them all, Grand Mal, Petite Mal, the so called epileptic equivalent, psychomotor epilepsy, behavioral seizure (out bursts of foul words, spitting, etc.) Did I help them all, I believe so, and they all received some relief. Did some completely respond? Yes many. I had a farm boy who could drive a tractor again and work the farm, I had two brothers with 250 to 300 petite mal seizures a day, they wore football helmets as the seizures combined to make them lose their balance and fall. They both responded and finally had only 5-6 spells a day with just momentary blinking. Oh yes, I had results with epileptics.

Good Things To Do in Patient Management:

Stop high energy foods, care for them like diabetics, I’d say to their parents, no sugar, watch the sugar content of all foods, like catsup. Have the child get adequate rest, no exhaustion!

Upper Cervical Care
Correct the Occipital Atlanto Axial Subluxation (head/neck misalignment).

Most cases of Idiopathic Epilepsy have an upper cervical subluxation and if caught early on, the adjustment solves the problem. Clear the subluxation and leave it alone!
