Giving Thanks To Upper Cervical Care Past, Present and Future

Today's post is a brief history of vector based Upper Cervical Care and the progression toward the future and the development of the QSM3 Procedure in Upper Cervical Care.  A great big thank you to all the people past, present and future that brought, bring and will bring advancements to this work for the people of the world so that we all may live a life closer to our potential.  Thanks again!

History

Vector based Upper Cervical Chiropractic systems (Wernsing, Grostic, Orthospinology, and NUCCA), all have a long history of high quality specific spinal corrections.  This pinnacle of chiropractic principles attracts some of the brightest and most detail-oriented doctors.  Wernsing introduced the concept of atlas laterality and rotatory (angular) measurement in the 1930’s. Grostic, in the 40’s, introduced a new cervical x-ray series and rotatory system of analysis (along with the supine leg check) in conjunction with Gregory.  Later, with NUCCA, Gregory organized specific misalignment types and greatly clarified the biomechanical principles involved, essentially bringing the correction to its present level of specificity by the late 1970’s.  Since the era of these pioneers, little has progressed in upper cervical chiropractic (UCC). The advent of multiple adjusting machines, although hailed by their inventors for specificity and ease, also have specific limitations in their ability to correct the misaligned spine.

The Progression of QSM³ Procedure

QSM³ is a logical progression and reasoned evolution of these great 20th century systems. It consolidates the brilliant discoveries of vector-based Upper Cervical Chiropractic (UCC) with innovative examination and re-thinking of the various protocols by Dr. Friedman. The attention to x-ray detail, the specific analysis, the correction table, and the lightest touch at the C1 vertebra (< .5lb) are the foundations that QSM3 integrates. The QSM³ procedure measures the 3D misalignment of the human frame to improve the correction potential. QSM³ uses a posture measurement device in a unique way to evaluate pelvis to skull misalignment.  In conjunction with the upper cervical analysis, QSM³ now enables measurement of the complete misalignment pathway. This means more detail, better data, and higher resulting potential to hold the correction.

QSM³ looks at a 3 dimensional full spine correction. This means the weight scales are only a small piece to the necessary information that demonstrates at a diagnostic level that any patient’s spine has been corrected. We see many patients that check clear in the weight scales (frontal plane) but have a head tilt and pelvic distortion. A correction is not one plane or piece but a 3D balance of all parts. The Anatometer, although it lays claim to measure pelvic twist/ distortion, definitely at an engineering level is completely inaccurate. We have retro fit our digital device with a system that measures rotation coupling in the pelvis.

The reason the pelvic distortion/correction is key to a balanced spine is:

1. It is the largest mass in the human frame and must be corrected to restore true balance.

2. It indicates as it rotates that the spine is breaking down against gravity.

3. Is the key aspect for symptomatic relief and must be corrected first before the weight is even an issue. This concept is like talking about the paint on the walls on a house when the foundation has not been set and balanced.

The QSM³ procedure is a comprehensive approach that restores body balance pelvis to skull using multiple headpiece placements when necessary to correct, by component, the breakdown of the human frame. Not everyone is a perfect linear misalignment but a culmination of years of multiple traumas.

This approach after being board certified in more than one UC procedure has begun to answer the complications that are a regular occurrence with stability and better results.

Upper Cervical Belated Holiday Thoughts

Soon it will be that time of year again! You will see it and hear it everywhere you go. Maybe you are thinking we are a little late with our holiday edition but holly, garland and Christmas lights are not what I am talking about. In fact, just after the last bits of holiday paraphernalia are put away, another thing is sure to be seen and heard. You say you still do not know what I am talking about!!! Well, just think about it. After all the shopping and worrying-- about what to get who, will it fit, do they have one already, can we afford it; and all the visiting--your friends, your family, your in-laws, your kids; and all the partying--cookies and milk, nuts and beer, chips and pretzels, dips, vegetables, wine, cheese and crackers (all, of course, before you sit down to a big meal). And after all the last minute rushing around, lost sleep, and I got a million things to do... What on earth could possibly (and only naturally) follow all this? That’s right--the fever, chills, ache-all-over feeling, coughing, sneezing and complaining of the flu season!

Maybe you have never put these two together before but it seems to me to be more than just coincidence that “flu season” happens to occur just after we’ve basically stuffed ourselves for weeks (probably since Thanksgiving), totally stressed ourselves out, probably destroyed any semblance of what might have been regular sleeping and exercise routines and, in general, completely abused our bodies. After all, we are too busy seeing people, going places (mostly Christmas parties... more eat, drink and be merry) and getting things done to consider our health! At least we are still contributing to our health by thinking positively. During the holiday season that should be easy, unless of course you are looking for a parking space at the mall, or it begins to blizzard on your way to a Christmas party. Oh well, so much for positive mental attitude. Unfortunately, in the holiday rush, people also neglect their spines even more. Year after year in offices all over the number of patient visits drops beginning in mid-December and continues to drop until the New Year.

Now I am not suggesting that we all forego the preparation, partying or even the panic of the holiday season, but it bothers me a bit that the world would like to con us into thinking that a flu season really exists. They say it just makes sense that at this time of year with its cold weather, and what is in nature a time of lean nutrition, that an overabundance of germs would exist and cause many people to become ill. In fact, the opposite is true. The cold weather kills many germs. The flu season is more a function of a society that on the whole has let its resistance be significantly lowered and consequently, is vulnerable to disease--not just the flu but also every disease. If you want to be well, you simply must make your health a priority. Do as many of the things that contribute to attaining and maintaining your health as you can--namely make good food choices in moderate amounts, exercise regularly, get the rest you need, keep a positive outlook, and of course, have your upper cervical spine checked periodically!!!

13 Benefits Of Upper Cervical Care: Part 2

#2 Clearer Thinking, Concentration and Memory

Science has only very recently begun to realize the relationship between the organs and the other parts of the body. In a push toward specialization in health fields during the second half of the 20th century, the interrelationship and interdependence of the body’s parts was all but lost. Now the tide is turning and people are realizing how important it is to address every aspect of the body in order to experience true health, maximum potential and overall well being including the ability to think clearly, concentrate and remember things.

Some educators have realized that for students to do well in their studies, especially in the lower grades, it is important that they get a good breakfast, one that has protein rather than one that is full of worthless carbohydrates from sugar. Of course, others think the answer to our many sugar-high, grade-school students is to prescribe some drug for them. The corporate world has begun to realize that by providing exercise for their executives, not only will they be healthier and have less absenteeism but that they will also be mentally sharper and more productive when they are working. We have all experienced the drowsiness and mental dullness that follows a big Thanksgiving Day meal, when our digestive systems make significant changes in our body chemistry. Alcohol not only affects your mental abilities when it is in your bloodstream but in sufficient amounts will affect your mental activity even the next day (we call it a hangover). Get a bad night's sleep and your mental sharpness will likely drop a noticeable level the next day.

All of the above examples of things that can affect our ability to think clearly are quite obvious and easy for us to understand. What is more, if these examples are true in the perceptible realm, then they are also true in the imperceptible realm. Any change in body chemistry whether it is due to over-the-counter medication, alcohol or even poor eating habits is going to adversely affect your mental acuity, your memory, your reasoning ability, your reaction times, and your ability to focus and concentrate. Perhaps the decrease is not noticeable to you but it may be to your boss or to those around you. Sometimes it is noticeable to us. When we are “coming down” with the flu or a cold, we realize that our mental productivity is down. However, more often it is not noticeable or at best we realize that we are just not “up to par” that day.

The reasons for this may be numerous. One of these reasons is nerve interference. When your head and neck are misaligned your nerve system is often not able to work at its full potential. Your nerve system is interrelated to every other system in your body. Every system is dependent upon a full complement of mental impulses in order to work properly. You cannot be fully energized without a good nerve supply. You cannot digest your food properly without a good nerve supply. Your body chemistry is less than it should be and your mental ability is decreased. You probably do not even notice it or if you do, you usually relate it to “having an off day.” Well no day should be an off day. Our bodies were created and meant to work properly all the time. If you want the most out of life then you want your mental faculties to be working their best, all the time or at least as much of the time as possible. That can only happen if you make sure that your nerve system is free of interference which is often caused by head/neck misalignment. Sure you are going to have off days because of wrong choices you make like staying up too late, lowering your body’s resistance, or not eating well, but that is all the more reason to make sure that your mental alertness on the job, in the car and in relating to people is not impaired. To make sure your thinking, concentration and memory are in tip top shape have periodic upper cervical care check-ups.
